According to the American Psychological Association, over 2 million older Americans are the victims of abuse each year. The National Center on Elder Abuse estimates that only 1 in 6 of those cases are ever reported to authorities. A Special US Senate Committee on Aging is looking into the issue and invited former child star, Mickey Rooney, now 90, to give testimony to the Committee.
The goal of the Committee’s hearing, captioned “Justice for All Ending Elder Abuse, Neglect & Financial Exploitation” was to draw attention to the issue of Elder Abuse. The Committee is also considering legislation to help coordinate federal, state and local efforts to combat Elder Abuse.
Mickey Rooney, who was recently granted Court protection from his step-children, testified about his own experiences. He stated that he felt “trapped, scared, used and frustrated. He also encouraged victims to speak up and to fight for themselves.
