Latest statistics from the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review indicate that hearing requests in May of this year topped 3,000 while over 2,800 cases were decided by Administrative Law Judges at the same time. This does represent an increase in decisions from a year earlier, primarily because of more judges available to handle cases.
However, be glad you don’t live in Anchorage, Alaska or Columbus, Ohio where the waiting time for a hearing in these offices exceeds 600 days. While we don’t deal with Alaska in this location, help is on the way for Columbus, and we’re appearing now in Lima, Ohio in front of judges from Texas and California who are helping play catch up for the Columbus office.
Overall pending cases in the system have decreased by nearly 10% since December 2008, while new hearing requests continue to grow because of the aging population and difficult economy.
We’re hoping for the best from the Agency and for our clients for the remainder of this year and 2011.
