As we hit November here in Northwest Ohio the weather certainly takes a turn for the cold. Nights are near freezing, days sometimes aren’t much better and we know that snow is just around the corner. Unfortunately, many Ohioans don’t have enough money to pay for the heat that they will need to get through another cold Ohio winter. This is especially true for many of the individuals going through the disability process who are out of work and may have been the only source of income for their families. Thankfully, there is help available. HEAP is a federally funded program to help with heating costs. The eligibility is determined based on your income relative to the federal poverty guidelines. The website details what they do and do not count as household income. Benefits from Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, Veteran’s Benefits, Workers’ Compensation all count towards your household income. Food stamps, tax refunds and Medicare payments are some examples of payments that do not count as your household income for purposes of HEAP. You can download the application here or call (800) 282-0880 to get more information.
