I spent a day in Columbus last week furthering my legal education. As usual, I learned a few useful tidbits that will make me better at what I do. But I also learned about something that goes beyond the practice of law. Something that struck a chord in my heart. I learned about Kids’ Chance of Ohio.
Kids’ Chance of Ohio is an organization whose mission is to provide need-based scholarships to the children of Ohio workers who have been killed or declared permanently disabled as a result of work-related injuries or occupational diseases. These are the children who, through no fault of their own, must share in the dire consequences of the loss of income arising from their parent’s misfortune.
Kids’ Chance of Ohio is supported by all aspects of the Ohio Workers’Compensation community, law firms, trade associations, employer groups, and medical providers. The mission is to make a difference. To make a difference in the lives of these children and to give them opportunities to grow and to benefit from all that further education brings. What greater gift than the gift of an education? And who more deserving?
In the oftentimes contentious and confrontational battlegrounds within which we do our jobs, it is refreshing to find common ground for such a worthwhile endeavor. I’ve made my first financial contribution today and encourage others so inclined to do so as well.
