Motorcycle accident statistics in Ohio do not lie; riding a motorcycle can be extremely dangerous. According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, there were 3,651 motorcycle crashes reported to police in Ohio between January 1 and December 31, 2014. These accidents led to the death of 140 motorcyclists and passengers, as well as 3,060 injuries.
Bikers between the ages of 51 and 55 comprised 15 percent of those killed on Ohio roads in 2014, while riders between the ages of 46 and 50 suffered more injuries than any other age group. About 20 percent of those killed were under the age of 30. Meanwhile, half of the riders killed were between the ages of 41 and 60.
Who caused these motorcycle crashes in Ohio?
While there were a vast number of different causes of accidents, liability typically falls on either the motorcyclist or another driver. According to the statistics:
- The motorcyclists themselves caused 55.2 percent of crashes. They caused 85 fatal crashes and 1,556 injury wrecks.
- Other drivers were responsible for 35.4 percent of crashes.
- Animals caused two deaths and 5.2 percent of wrecks.
Alcohol played a role in a significant portion of the accidents where the bikers were at-fault. There were 338 alcohol-related motorcycle crashes in Ohio during 2014, which included 49 fatalities and 300 injuries.
Do motorcycle helmets affect the rate of injuries or fatalities?
While Ohio law only requires new riders (regardless of age) and riders (and passengers) under 18 to wear a helmet, the statistics show that wearing a helmet lessens the risk of serious or fatal injury.
Only 37 riders who died in a 2014 crash in Ohio were wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, while the number of helmetless riders who sustained fatal injuries is almost three times that (91 riders). An additional 1,550 riders suffered injuries without a helmet. Fortunately, over 37 percent of bikers who wore a helmet during a crash reported suffering no injuries.
