How can your treating doctor help you win your disability case? One way is to complete a form outlining your restrictions. This form, called a residual functional capacity form, is your doctor’s chance to list your physical or emotional restrictions and any additional limitations your conditions cause you. Your doctor could also list these restrictions/limitations in his/her office notes about you.
Why is this important? To start, your treating doctor’s medical opinion regarding your disability is to be given substantial weight by Social Security. His/her opinion is given more weight because they have seen you more and have a better understanding of your conditions and the specific effects that those conditions have on you. Also, other than your treating doctor’s opinion, usually the only other opinions are from either doctors who have only examined you one time, or, worse yet, a doctor who has never examined you and is only looking at your medical records. Most importantly, your doctor’s opinion could be what puts you over the top in winning your disability case.
