Bowling Green, Ohio, population 29,294 (2009 U.S. Census), is approximately 20 miles south of Toledo, in Northwest Ohio. First settled in 1832, Bowling Green was incorporated as a town in 1855 and became a city in 1901. Bowling Green, OH was built on the edge of the Great Black Swamp, a once foreboding region in Northwest Ohio. The swamp consisted of dense forests, and, for much of the year, the land was flooded, delaying settlement for decades. The establishment of the Northwest Territory in 1787 encouraged settlers to pour into the area.
