Organ perforation is among the side effects reportedly associated with the Mirena. It is believed that the IUD can migrate from its original position after insertion, perforating the uterine wall or lodging itself in the uterus. Mirena may also migrate into the pelvic area, leading to adhesions, scarring or intestinal perforation.

The Mirena IUD was originally approved in 2000 as an intrauterine contraceptive, and in 2009 was approved for treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding in women who have already given birth. The Mirena IUD contains a synthetic version of the hormone progestrin and is said to be effective in preventing pregnancy for up to five years. Mirena IUD should be recommended to women who have had at least one (1) child. Mirena has been associated with many severe gynecological problems. These problems include:

  • Device migration which causes damage to Uterus or other organs
  • Abscesses at the area of insertion
  • Embedment into the uterus causing permanent damage
  • Infertility after device is removed
  • Conceiving while device is in and born with defects
  • PID
  • Organ perforations outside reproductive area
  • Internal bleeding causing death
  • Erosion of the muscles and flesh surrounding device, leading to infection or death
  • Migration / loss of IUD (unable to locate)
  • Emergency Hysterectomies to save lives or stop device from causing additional damage to internal organs.

If you or anyone you know has been injured by the Mirena IUD, you may be entitled to compensation.
