There are currently a number of lawsuits filed by women against S-A, claiming S-A failed to warn about the risk of permanent hair loss and hid studies linking the drug to toxic side effects. While alopecia is common following cancer treatments due to the nature of chemotherapy, its permanence is not.

Taxotere is administered as an IV every three weeks. It works by stopping tumorous cells from reproducing. Taxotere is produced by Sanofi-Aventis (S-A), a pharmaceutical company in France.Taxotere has been linked to causing hair loss (alopecia), which in some cases can be permanent. S-A is being accused of failing to warn both patients and doctors of these adverse affects. Up until 2015, the company assured users that hair loss would be temporary. In December 2015, the company simply removed that statement from the label. There is another, equally effective drug on the market, Taxol, which has not been linked to these adverse risks. If patients were adequately informed of these risks they may have chosen to use Taxol over Taxotere.

The FDA has not published a formal warning letter regarding permanent hair loss and Taxotere use; however they did change the label on the drug to include a warning of permanent hair loss (alopecia) in December 2015. There have been numerous FDA warnings against S-A for “false and misleading” advertisements overstating the benefits of Taxotere.
